Peace Programme in Mindanao
06.14.2005

The Governments of the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand and the United Nations (UN) recently signed an agreement to support the Action for Conflict Transformation (ACT) for Peace Programme in Mindanao for the next five years.  Australia and New Zealand are providing US$14M and US$1.1M respectively.  UN agencies will extend technical support in the implementation of this programme by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) and the Regional Government of the Automomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The ACT for Peace programme contributes to the consolidation of peace and development in Mindanao through continued assistance to communities affected by armed conflict through capacity building for peace and delivery of essential services.

Present during the signing ceremony were: Dr. Zahidul Huque, UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Representative; Vic McGuigan, First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission, New Zealand Embassy; Ambassador Tony Hely, Australian Embassy; Deborah Landey, UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative, UN Development Programme (UNDP); Executive Sec. Eduardo Ermita; and Sec. Romulo Neri, National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director General.
